Dr. Todd Pierce, PhD
Dr. Todd Pierce is a professional anthropologist and holds a PhD from The Catholic University of America (2011), a Masters from Yale University (1995), and a BA from The University of Connecticut (1993).
Todd has over 30 years of applied research experience in the United States and abroad, and now lives full-time with his wife on the island of Isla Mujeres, Mexico.
Dr. Pierce's formal teaching experience includes The Catholic University of America (Washington, DC), Stockholm University (Stockholm, Sweden), and 12 years as acting Director/Founder of The Isla Mujeres Ethnographic Field School, where he has mentored nearly 100 student-led research projects - many of which have gone on to be presented at professional conferences or published in peer reviewed academic journals.
His past professional research included work with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and the Hispanic Health Council, and focused on myriad complex social and cultural issues. These include social network analysis, ethics in anthropology, ethnographic method development and ethnographic representation, HIV-AIDS (transmission and prevention), drug use and misuse, harm reduction, homelessness, poverty, violence (structural, symbolic, political, everyday, gender and orientation based, community and family violence), childhood sexual abuse, and sexual violence.
Todd's primary research areas include Washington, DC (18 years), Hartford, CT (5 years), Isla Mujeres, Mexico (12 years) and New York, NY (1 year) in addition to other locations.
He has conducted pilot research in Washington DC, Hartford, CT, New York City, Chicago, Stockholm, Reykjavik, Prague, Jamaica, Belize, Honduras, and Mexico (Quintana Roo and Yucatan)
